Paste or type text to see live counts for words, characters, characters without spaces, lines, and UTF-8 bytes.

A Word document can be loaded straight from your computer. It is unzipped and read in the browser, so the file goes no further than the page you are on.

How it works

  1. Paste text, or load a .docx or text file.
  2. Read the counts as they update instantly.
  3. Clear or copy the text when you are done.

Frequently asked questions

Can I count a Word document?

Yes. Pick a .docx file or drop it on the box and its text loads into the editor. A .docx is a ZIP of XML, and the browser can already unzip and read it, so nothing is uploaded and no extra software is needed. The older binary .doc format cannot be read — open it in Word and save it as .docx first.

Which parts of a Word file are counted?

The body you wrote, including tables and text boxes. Headers, footers, footnotes and comments live in separate parts of the file and are left out, as is text you deleted with track changes turned on and any field code such as an automatic page number.

What counts as a word?

Utilark uses the browser’s language-aware word segmentation when supported. Older browsers fall back to groups separated by whitespace.

What does UTF-8 bytes mean?

It is the storage size of the text when encoded as UTF-8. Korean characters usually use more bytes than basic Latin letters.

Is the text saved?

No. The counter runs in your browser and does not send or save the text on Utilark servers.
